Introduction
MNS Attorneys is proud to announce its collaboration with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on the Gwakwani Project, an initiative aimed at empowering rural communities through the establishment of a Social Justice Community Centre. This project, part of MNS Attorneys’ ongoing Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives, seeks to address the infrastructural challenges faced by the Gwakwani Village, a remote rural community approximately 650 km from Johannesburg.
Partnership with UJ and Community Impact
The partnership was launched last Friday, with MNS Attorneys sponsoring the project’s infrastructure and committing to provide ongoing legal services to support the community’s growth. The Social Community Centre will serve as a hub for community engagement, facilitating access to essential social and civic services, including:
- Social assistance grants
- ID cards
- Birth certificates
- Other civic services
This collaboration with UJ underscores MNS Attorneys’ commitment to fostering social justice and community empowerment in underserved areas.
About Gwakwani Village
The Gwakwani Village is home to approximately 150 individuals and faces significant infrastructural challenges, including:
- No access to grid electricity
- No municipal piped water
- Limited cellular coverage
- Scarce economic activity
The closest clinic is located 14 km away, and the nearest schools are 7 km and 14 km away for primary and secondary education, respectively. Over the last two years, the Gwakwani Project has expanded its reach to neighbouring communities, including Matatani, Mbodi, and Hanyani High School, impacting over 2,300 residents across these areas.
MNS Attorneys' Ongoing Commitment
MNS Attorneys has committed to providing legal services and sponsoring the development of the Social Justice Community Centre, which will not only improve access to essential services but also promote social cohesion and empowerment for the local community. The project’s expansion to neighbouring villages is further proof of the initiative’s broad impact, helping nearby communities with education, healthcare access, and legal aid.
Conclusion
The collaboration between MNS Attorneys and the University of Johannesburg for the Gwakwani Village Project exemplifies the power of partnerships in addressing social challenges in rural communities. Through this initiative, MNS Attorneys reaffirms its commitment to giving back to society, promoting social justice, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of underserved communities.
